Spooky Smiles Halloween Layout by Andrea Lake
Nothing says “happy hauntings” quite like the playful palette in the Simple Stories Spooky Things collection—lavender webs, candy-corn orange, pops of lime, and the cutest little ghosts. I wanted the page to feel like a burst of Halloween joy, so I built the design around an oversized circular focal and placed it on the purple spiderweb paper, finishing the background with a stitched black border for just a hint of spooky.
The star of the page is the giant paper rosette that frames the photo. I cut long orange strips, accordion-folded them, and formed a ruffled circle, then stacked green, cream, and purple die-cut circles on top with stitching for texture. In the center is a 5”x4" photo from our very first Trunk-or-Treat after moving to Colorado—my husband and the kids dressed as Harry Potter characters, and we even decorated the car to match the theme. It was such a fun way to celebrate our new home and community!
Embellishing was pure play. I clustered pumpkins, ghosts, webs, and florals from the Bits & Pieces and stickers, tucking some under the photo and popping others up for dimension. Puffy stars and enamel accents scatter like candy and lead the eye to the foam phrase title, “Spooky Smiles,” which anchors the bottom curve of the circle. A small label holds a quick note about our Colorado firsts, so the story is captured without crowding the design.
If you’re scrapbooking Halloween this season, try anchoring your page with one dramatic shape—like a rosette or large circle—and let themed icons do the rest. Spooky Things makes it easy to mix cute and creepy in all the right ways. Here’s to pages full of magical memories and spooky smiles!
