Built to Last

Built to Last

Hi paper lover! Have you seen the new Rustic Legend collection by Simple Stories? It's an amazing collection with masculine details you can use for kids and adults at any time of the year. I'm Rebeca Ruiz @SimplyRebecaRuiz, and I'm very happy to share with you this layout I created for my husband using the Rustic Legend collection and a bit of mixed media. I had lots of fun doing this layout and playing with the stamps in the collection to create the background. Let's take a closer look at the page, while I walk you through the creative process, and if you enjoy reels, visit @SimpleStories_ on Instagram to watch how this layout came to life.

Last year, we visited the Hoover Dam. It's an amazing place full of engineering and history, so when I saw the Rustic Legend collection, I knew it was time to document some photos of those memories. After choosing two photos of my husband, I selected the chipboard frame to enhance the portrait photo, making it stand out in the layout. Then, I selected a red paper from the 6" x 8" pad to mat the other photo. With those colors in mind, I went for coordinating ink colors to use in the background and create contrast with the photos. I started by using Distress Oxides Iced Spruce and Fossilized Amber. The green ink was diluted in water and applied using the kissing technique. The yellow ink was applied with a brayer to add color on top of the base paper, which is a Color Vibe Elm/Cream Grid.

When the ink was dry, I arranged a few numbers from the Rustic Legend Numbers Stamp. Then, I stamped them in different areas of the layout using Distress Inks Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain. For additional texture in the background, I used the electric circuit and stars in the Rustic Legend Icon stamp. The circuit was stamped using Archival Ink Watering Can for a subtle color, and the stars were stamped in different colors using Iced Spruce, Fossilized Amber, and Distress Ink Aged Mahogany to create balance in the page.

It is so much fun to create the background. If you have never done it, give it a try, maybe you'll love it too! Once the inks were dry, I added a few rub-on designs, most of them around the photos, and the ruler in the top border.

Since I'm a paper lover, I chose four patterned papers to use behind the photos. The first one is the wood-grain paper. I tear the bottom edge for texture and use it to back the main photo. Behind you can find the green paper with the stars, the striped papers, and finally, a few rulers cut from one of the papers.

For the title, I used the foam sticker "Built to Last" since it is perfect for the photos of the Hoover Dam, and the cream border around it helps it stand out on the page. Then, I added two chipboard pieces, the camera and the yellow ticket to embellish and balance the layout.

With all the colors and designs in the background, the layout was already busy, but I wanted to add a few more details. Around the photos, you can find a few stars from the die cuts, foam, and chipboard packs. Also, you can find a few enamel dots and decorative brads.

Thank you so much for your visit. I hope you like this layout, and it inspires you to craft. Please, come back soon for more inspiration.
